šŸ‘€ TITS UP, THIS IS IMPORTANT

The FDA has approved a new antibiotic for UTI’s for the first time in 30, yes, THIRTY years.

You know that feeling. The burn. The constant urge to pee. Having to take antibiotics is never fun.
The different bacteria that can cause urinary tract infections are becoming increasingly more resistant to standard antibiotics making UTI’s more difficult to treat.

ā€œMore than 2.8 million antimicrobial-resistant infections occur in the U.S. each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A 2019 study found resistance to at least one drug in more than 92% of bacteria that can cause UTIs. Around 80% showed resistance to at least two.ā€

Dr. Candace Granberg, a pediatric urologist and surgeon-in-chief at Mayo Clinic Children’s in Rochester, Minnesota explains ā€œIn simple terms, this new antibiotic works its magic by using a novel binding method to block a bacteria’s ability to replicate,ā€

The current, generic version is likely to still be widely used due to a higher cost and brand name with the new one, but having some diversity in treatment options could help with the drug resistance issue overall.

Stay Abreast take: While middle-aged men are still in the lead for the greatest alcohol consumption, what is the root of the larger problem with the consumption rates of younger women? Couldn’t be the economy, the lack of affordable resources or housing, the state of reproductive rights, or maybe the cost of a therapy session… OR could this be in response to more young women having more discretionary income in a corporate world?

  • The UK legally defines the term ā€˜Woman’ as someone who is biologically born female, excluding transgender women. ā€œAmnesty International U.K. described the ruling as ā€œdisappointing,ā€ but said it is ā€œimportant to stress that the court has been clear that trans people are protected under the Equality Act against discrimination and harassment.ā€ Read more here.

Stay Abreast take: With safety of people being of the utmost importance, this certainly is cause for concern for US citizens who identify as transgender.
