👀 TITS UP, THIS IS IMPORTANT

♥️ AI technology in mammograms could predict heart disease in women

ICYMI: Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States but remains underdiagnosed in women and there is also lack of awareness.

Researchers said the use of AI-enabled mammogram screening tools could help identify more women with early signs of cardiovascular disease by taking better advantage of screening tests that many women routinely receive.

“We see an opportunity for women to get screened for cancer and also additionally get a cardiovascular screen from their mammograms. Our study showed that breast arterial calcification is a good predictor for cardiovascular disease, especially in patients younger than age 60. If we are able to screen and identify these patients early, we can refer them to a cardiologist for further risk assessment."

-Theo Dapamede, MD, PhD, postdoctoral fellow at Emory University in Atlanta and study's lead author

🤔 WHAT WE’RE ASKING

Why do I get a shooting pain in my butt when I’m on my period?

  • Because our muscles are easily irritated or already inflamed during menstruation, we might experience buttock cramping or rectal pain during your period. These rectal cramps and pains are called proctalgia fugax, literally meaning “anal pain of an unknown cause.” It happens when your butthole muscles spasm and contract. Read more here.

Are women actually more emotional than men?

  • Not really, a study finds. Furthermore, there are also certain biases in how people look at men and women's emotions. "For instance, a man whose emotions fluctuate during a sporting event is described as 'passionate,'" the University of Michigan (U-M) noted in a news release, citing study senior author Adriene Beltz. "But a woman whose emotions change due to any event, even if provoked, is considered 'irrational.'" Read more here.

As a woman, should I try intermittent fasting?

  • I wish we found an easy answer. Studies show women can still receive the benefits of fasting, but it can also impact your hormones: progesterone and estrogen. Read more here.

Is ‘mommy brain’ real?

  • Yes, it is. There have been countless studies around women’s hormones postpartum but only recent studies around the brain. One showed that pregnancy leads to significant structural and functional changes in the brain while another showed alterations to gray matter in certain areas of pregnant womens’ brains.
